Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Grade, Upper Academy
Karen Allen, Language Arts/Social Studies
I am a local girl who grew up right here in the Loomis area. I went to a local elementary school, attended Del Oro High School, Sierra Junior College and went on to Sacramento State University where I received both my Bachelors Degree and teaching credential. I have been married to the same wonderful man for the past twenty-nine years. We have been blessed with two wonderful children. Our oldest, Katrina is a newlywed who married her high school sweetheart this past June. She is following in the family teaching legacy and hopes to have her teaching credential completed in the next two years. My son Derek is a student a William Jessup and is pursuing a career in Psychology. My Core Knowledge training encompasses the majority of my teaching experience. I began my teaching career as a Kindergarten teacher in Loomis. I moved on to Rocklin Academy where I spent six years as a first grade and fourth grade teacher. I then transferred to Accelerated Learning Academy where I taught grades fourth, seventh, eighth and ninth. This last year I taught at Global Youth Charter School in the sixth grade. I am truly looking forward to working with your children this year! It is my goal to help my students grow socially and academically and to help prepare them for their years ahead in high school.
Kristin O'Neill, Science/Language Arts
I grew up locally in Roseville and graduated as valedictorian from Woodcreek High School. After graduation I moved to Los Angeles where I attended UCLA and graduated with a double major in Geography/Environmental Studies and International Development Studies. While at UCLA I was a senior researcher in the Undergraduate Research Scholars Program, through which I was able to collaborate with faculty on Pacific dry forest research that has been published in the scientific journals Oryx, Pacific Science, and Diversity and Distributions. I then moved to New York for Teach for America, where I earned my teaching credential and master’s degree from Relay Graduate School of Education. I participated in two years of STEM professional development through the program Urban Advantage. I had the privilege of teaching 7th grade science to amazing groups of students at public charter schools in both Brooklyn and the Bronx. I am now thrilled to be part of the community at Harvest Ridge Placer Academy! It is my hope to get students excited about pursuing college majors and careers in the STEM field, and to help build character, critical thinking skills, content knowledge, laboratory skills, and technological expertise so that they are prepared for success in high school, college, and beyond. When I’m not teaching, I enjoy traveling, cooking, and spending time with family.
Lesley Day, Math/Language Arts
Hi! My name is Lesley Day, and I am excited to be teaching in the Upper Academy at Harvest Ridge. I have a passion for teaching in creative and interactive ways so that students fully understand the concepts. In addition, I value my relationships with my students and strive to develop their character so that they are kind, considerate and responsible young people. Through my education from Liberty University, my experience teaching in Jr. High for six years, and the opportunity to be home with my own teenage children for some time, I have acquired invaluable skills which are important to understanding the adolescent mind, while also being aware that each student is a unique individual. Personally, I have been married to my high school sweetheart for 18 years. We have a daughter starting high school and a son who is going into 7th grade. Together my family spends a great deal of time on the soccer field or taking various adventures to the mountains and the ocean. I look forward to a wonderful year of getting to know each and every student and making math a joy to learn.
